Pacesetter Award

2017 ASM Foundation Pacesetter Award

LIFT – Lightweight Innovations For Tomorrow is honored to be recognized and to receive the 2017 ASM Foundation Pacesetter Award.

Providing professional development opportunities for teachers and encouraging students of all ages to study materials sciences and consider advanced manufacturing as a career choice are at the core of our education and workforce development efforts as an institute.

LIFT is a Detroit-based public-private partnership with three missions – to enable lightweighting solutions through applied research and development; to transition those new technologies into the marketplace; and to develop an educated and skilled American workforce, confident in using those new lightweighting technologies and processes.

We are proud to be a supporter of the ASM Foundation’s Materials Camps for teachers, one of LIFT’s first education and workforce development investments.  Since materials science is an interdisciplinary field, activities participating teachers learn can be integrated in standard courses such as chemistry, physics, and industrial technology, or used as the foundation of a materials science elective. Most of the projects and experiments do not require special equipment or costly supplies, so they can easily be brought into a classroom.

We applaud the ASM Foundation for continuing to expand the reach of the camps to involve more teachers – and therefore more students – and we are thankful to the dedicated educators who come back year-after-year as “Master Teachers” to assist in ensuring the camps are a success.

Connecting teachers to materials sciences is key, because when those teachers take what they’ve learned back into the classroom, the impact we will have – from a little investment – grows exponentially.

Since LIFT’s founding in 2014, we have invested in over 40 education and workforce initiatives around the country, linking and leveraging existing local resources to ensure those initiatives are not just having an impact in that local area, but that they can be replicated and scaled in other regions.

We are proud of our partnership with ASM and look forward to making it even stronger in the future.
