Mission

The function of the Emerging Professionals Program is to allow a younger demographic, the future of ASM, to see, understand and be involved with the inner workings of an internationally recognized professional society. The program will allow ASM to seamlessly transition through from one generation to the next. Involvement goes beyond the local chapter level; Emerging Professionals will interact with ASM at the national level, organizing and executing events at the ASM Annual Meeting held at MS&T, guiding the direction of ASM by attending various committee meetings, as well as interacting with and learning from a diverse group of professionals who are acknowledged leaders within ASM International and as acknowledged mentors in the field.

Who qualifies? ASM International members, up to 5 yrs post graduation, with a desire to learn more about ASM International committee involvement. This Program is geared toward professional ASM members, students are not eligible.

For more information on the Emerging Professionals Program, please contact Margaret Bush or Patrick Anderson.

Emerging Professionals Ongoing Efforts

The Emerging Professionals Program is a valuable asset to ASM International in addition to the programming and sessions at MS&T. Throughout the year, this group of highly motivated professional volunteers work on pressing issues affecting the early career professional demographic.

Throughout 2007-2008, the members of the Program will be engaged in the following subcommittee work:

  • Awareness & Education - This group will be charged with “spreading the word” regarding the EPP, targeting specific groups such as Material Advantage, Professional Members & Chapters, and the overall ASM Community.
  • Communication – facilitating the creation and organization of promotional and archival material.
  • Conversion – Investigate the current student to professional conversion situation and develop an appropriate plan of action to increase activity and retention.
  • New Member Development – continued development of a start-to-finish process for new members of the Emerging Professionals Program and cultivation of potential future candidates.
  • New Products & Services – Ongoing research and development of new ASM products and services geared toward meeting the needs of the early career professional

MS&T Programming

“The ASM Emerging Professionals Program is proud to present the following symposium in the Special Topics section of the MS&T ’08 technical program. We look forward to learning from our colleagues in similar stages of their careers, and hope to have your attendance and involvement in this unique event.”

Perspectives from Emerging Materials Professionals: Early Strategies for Career Development
This symposium is specifically intended to provide a forum for young/emerging professionals in materials science and engineering, regardless of society affiliation, to present their work and/or share their experience with others at a similar juncture in their careers. Abstracts focusing on emerging technologies and/or entrepreneurial pursuits within the field of materials science and engineering are particularly encouraged. Unique models of industrial organization, collaboration, design of experiment, and/or training and education are also of interest. Authors with all levels of education (B.S., M.S. and Ph.D.) are encouraged to submit abstracts to provide attendees from all affiliate societies (ACerS, AIST, ASM, and TMS) the opportunity to understand the types of job activities possible in the early years of a career in this field, and provide a forum for dialogue about job searches, job satisfaction, and technical matters. No proceedings are planned for this symposium so no written manuscript will be required upon acceptance of submitted abstracts.

ASM Emerging Professionals Program - Life in the Fast Lane of MS&T 2007

ASM President Dr. Dianne ChongFor the first time, the MS&T community was exposed to the hard work of our ASM Emerging Professionals Program who has identified the need for demographic tailored programming. This Program for early career professionals was introduced to our ASM family last year in Cincinnati in a developmental/observational capacity.

In 2007, the professional volunteer members of the Emerging Professionals Program developed, implemented and executed an amazing session with ASM President Dr. Dianne Chong as keynote speaker entitled - Life in the Fast Lane: Building Skills to Thrive in the Materials & Global Community. The session also featured a panel discussion by Dr. Ellen Cerreta, Los Alamos National Lab, Mr. John R. Keough, P.E., FASM, Chief Executive Officer, Applied Process Incorporated and Mr. Christopher L. LaPole, Application Metallurgical Engineer, The Timken Company.

Stay tuned for more information, updates and insight into the initiatives of the Emerging Professionals Program including efforts related to the new ASM Strategic Planning and programming at MS&T 2008 in Pittsburgh.

ImageThis year, the Emerging Professionals attended MS&T in Cincinnati to observe ASM’s leadership in action and to experience the society’s events and activities. We learned by attending the Material Advantage Mixer, ASM Leadership Luncheon, ASM Awards Dinner, and the Membership Committee Meeting. We also “shadowed” the Chapter Council, the Federal Affairs Committee, the Handbook Committee and the Programming Committee, and we also attended lectures, technical sessions and other events.

ASM data indicates that if we can actively engage a member for three years consecutively, the retention rate increases exponentially. This program will help us learn how best to engage Emerging Professionals!

Our class will participate in the program for two more years, with new members joining each year for a consistent rotation. These leaders will develop their own program and experience each year under the guidance of the Membership Committee. We will then move on to areas of interest in the national committee/council structure, feeding committees with fresh ideas and perspectives.

We look forward to working with ASM’s volunteer leadership to make a better, stronger ASM that will benefit all members, particularly those who are making the transition from university to Emerging Professionals.
