Aleris Closes Its Tipton, Indiana Specification Alloys Facility

Aleris International, Inc. permanently closed its Tipton, Indiana specification alloys facility, effective Dec. 1. As previously announced, production at this facility was idled on March 30, 2008. Production has been transferred to other Aleris facilities in North America.

Owens Corning has increased the certified recycled content in its flagship PINK Fiberglas insulation to a minimum of 40 percent. At this level of recycled content, the amount of waste glass diverted from landfills could form a two-lane glass highway that extends 1.3 times around the world.

AFS Trinity Power Corporation reported that independent test results demonstrate that batteries in combination with ultracapacitors will enable a plug in hybrid vehicles to have a useful life that is 6 times greater than plug ins that use lithium batteries alone -- 150,000 miles versus 25,000 miles for a conventional plug in hybrid that uses lithium ion batteries alone.

UTC Power Fuel Cell Systems to Provide Power for Korean Town

UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. company, announced that Samsung Everland has purchased 12 UTC Power 400 kW fuel cell systems for installation at a GS Power plant in the Town of Anyang, just outside Seoul. The fuel cells will provide power for about 5 percent of Anyang's population, with 40,000 megawatt hours total annual power output expected.

Boeing Projects China as World's Fastest-Growing Aviation Market

The Boeing Company detailed its 2008 Current Market Outlook for the China region today, forecasting a market for 3,710 new airplanes worth about $390 billion over the next 20 years.

LRM Industries of Rockledge, Fla., announced a new production line, custom designed for the unique, patent-pending Sheetless ThermoForming technology invented by LRM in 2007. A Need for Improved Efficiency in Nanomanufacturing

New research shows that environmental gains derived from the use of nanomaterials may be offset in part by the processes used to manufacture them. Research published in a special issue of the Journal of Industrial Ecology highlights the need for improved efficiency in the manufacturing of nanoscale materials to reduce energy use, emissions, solid waste, and the use of toxic input materials.
