Students Materials Camp

Local organizers of Materials Camp can provide detailed descriptions for assignments and give estimates of the amount of time involved in various duties. Members of ASM International are encouraged to volunteer as “Materials Mentors” at our student camps, as well as, local Materials Science and Engineering graduate students. Volunteering at the camps can included lab activities and extra-curricular events (industry field trips, social activities, etc.). High school math/science teachers are encourage to assist our “Materials Mentors” since they have extensive past experience working with high school-aged students.

Basic Duties:
To serve as a positive and energetic role model, encouraging a group of young people to consider potential careers in science, particularly engineering with an emphasis on metals, materials and applied science.

“Materials Mentor”:
Lead a group of 5 to 6 academically accomplished, energetic and active high school students. Manage a “failure analysis” discovery process and teach the applied scientific method bringing a suitable material that has “failed”, for group examination, failure analysis case study investigation. Facilitate the exploration and understanding of the scientific method through brief verbal remarks, demonstrations and frequent impromptu presentations. Refrain from long lectures.
