SPECIFICS
▪ Based on submission of design-focused project reports describing work performed as part of the capstone course or a team project performed by undergraduate engineering students at any level.
▪ Recognizing the diversity of design curricula in materials and related engineering departments, a broad definition of “design” is considered for this competition.
▪ Projects submitted can address topics including: (a) design of a material; (b) design of a process for materials synthesis or fabrication; (c) selection of materials in design of products or devices.
AWARDS
The winning teams will receive:
First Prize: $2,000.00 + $ 500 travel assistance + $ 500 to the department for support of future design teams
Second Prize: $1,500.00 + $ 500 travel assistance
Third Prize: $1,000.00 + $ 500 travel assistance
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
The awards will be presented at the Fall MS&T meeting.
PARTICIPATION AND ELIGIBILITY
▪ Design project may be submitted by teams (with two or more students) from any undergraduate university engineering program (e.g., materials science and engineering, metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, polymer engineering, and manufacturing engineering, or related programs, including but not limited to mechanical-, chemical-, electrical-, or bio-engineering).
▪ Project may be based on work performed as part of the capstone design course or a team project performed by undergraduate students at any level. However, the submitted project must address the broad definition of “design” as stated above. Interdisciplinary teams with members from various engineering and science disciplines are encouraged to submit their entry.
▪ Please note! Project should not be a summary (“rehash”) of the existing literature. The team should show clear evidence of innovative and original work.
▪ Project must have a major focus on materials science.
APPLICATION SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
While specifics of design projects may differ from program to program, each entry submitted (a maximum of three entries per university) must include the following:
▪ COVER PAGE: This should include: 1) Title of design project; 2) Statement indicating if the entry is based on a capstone course or other team project; 3) Names of student team members and their respective and faculty advisor; 4) Name of institution and department; 5) Correspondence address.
▪ STATEMENT FROM THE DEPARTMENT or PROGRAM CHAIR: This letter should endorse the work described is based on work performed by the student team.
▪ IMPACT OF DESIGN COMPETITION ON CURRICULUM: The application will be strengthened if the Chair’s and/or the Faculty Advisor’s letters address pedagogical changes/curricular improvements that this design competition has helped foster.
▪ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This is a one page description of problem statement, approach, key results, and concluding remarks.
▪ PROJECT REPORT: Brevity is encouraged; however, please balance this with the need to clearly communicate the project to a broad and diverse audience; figures and tables should be clear and the narrative should be formatted to enhance clarity and ease of readability.
o A maximum of 25 pages is highly recommended – single space, 12-point font, 1-inch margins.
o Submit a 2 to 5-minute video describing what you’ve done.
▪ SIGNED STATEMENT OF WILLINGNESS TO ATTEND: Each entry must be accompanied by a signed statement from the teams (endorsed by the faculty advisor and/or chair) indicating that at least one team member will be present at the Fall Meeting of ASM International (IMAT Conference) to receive the award.
▪ SIGNED LETTERS OF SUPPORT:
o A letter of support from the faculty advisor for the project should be included. The letter should address the uniqueness and usefulness of the project, creativity of the approach, and any other strengths of the proposal that the review committee should consider.
o For industry-sponsored projects: A letter of support from the project liaison highlighting the value of the project to the company is required.
o If this entry is part of a larger research project, a letter from the director / principal investigator of the larger project describing the role of this entry in the overall project must be submitted.
DEADLINE: June 30
A subcommittee of the Action in Education Committee will review the entries and determine the winners.
